Celebrating National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week at Grasonville Health Services: Let’s Talk About It

Hey everyone! As we recognize National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW), I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that’s really close to my heart—substance use, recovery, & the importance of breaking the stigma. At Grasonville Health Services, we’re all about creating an open space for those who need help & sharing the facts so we can all make more informed choices about our health and wellness.

What’s National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week All About?

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week is a time for us to step back and reflect on how drugs & alcohol affect not just our bodies, but our minds, families, & communities. It’s a chance to share science-based, accurate information, so we can help each other make healthier decisions. For me, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness, offer support, & start more conversations—because understanding addiction is a key part of breaking the stigma that often surrounds it.

MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) is Changing Lives

For those who don’t know, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is one of the most effective ways to treat opioid & alcohol use disorders. By combining FDA-approved medications (like methadone or buprenorphine) with counseling & therapy, MAT addresses both the physical & emotional sides of addiction.

We’ve seen firsthand how MAT can help people rebuild their lives. It’s not just about taking a medication—it’s about offering support, creating a personalized recovery plan, & empowering individuals to take control of their journey. I’ve watched so many people go from feeling hopeless to finding a renewed sense of purpose & strength, & it’s honestly amazing to be part of that process.

Why Education Matters So Much

I can’t tell you enough how important it is to really understand the facts when it comes to substance use. There are so many myths & misunderstandings out there, and it can make it harder for people to get the help they need. Whether it’s misinformation about addiction or the stigma surrounding those who are struggling, it’s crucial that we have honest conversations & provide reliable information.

That’s what NDAFW is all about—spreading the facts & creating a safe space for people to learn, ask questions, & share their stories. It’s also about showing people that they’re not alone & there’s no shame in seeking help. We all deserve the chance to heal, & education is the first step in that process.

Let’s Keep Talking & Supporting Each Other

So, as we celebrate National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week, I encourage you to take some time to learn more about substance use & recovery. It doesn’t matter if you’re personally affected or if you know someone who is—it’s about understanding and supporting one another. Here at GHS, we are truly here for you. If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re ready to walk alongside you, offering the care and compassion you deserve.

We’ve got a long way to go in breaking down the stigma, but if we all come together & continue to educate, we can make a real difference.
