Medications and Treatments

We offer Methadone and Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone), both FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder. These medications are used as part of our medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program to help manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Methadone is a long-acting opioid agonist that helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms by activating the same receptors in the brain as opioids, but in a controlled and safer way. It is dispensed daily at the clinic under supervision to ensure safe and effective use. Unlike Suboxone, you do not have to wait, & can take it immediately- even if you used that morning.

Suboxone contains buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, and naloxone, an opioid antagonist. It helps manage cravings and withdrawal without producing the full “high” of opioids. Naloxone is included to deter misuse, as it can cause withdrawal if abused. You must wait until you’re in partial withdrawal to safely take Suboxone, or PWD (precipitated withdrawal) can occur.

 • Methadone is a full opioid agonist, requiring daily visits to the clinic for supervised dosing, especially in the early stages of treatment.
 • Suboxone is a partial agonist and antagonist combination, making it less likely to cause overdose. Many patients can take it at home once stabilized.
 • Both medications are effective, and the choice depends on individual needs, medical history, and treatment goals.

Our medical team will work with you to determine the best option based on your medical history, addiction severity, and treatment goals.

Health homes integrate physical and behavioral health (both mental health and substance use) and long-term services and supports for high-need, high-cost Medicaid populations. By better coordinating care and linking people to needed services, health homes are designed to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs. Health homes are specifically for Medicaid beneficiaries with chronic illnesses. In contrast to the physician-led primary care focus of the medical home, health homes offer person-centered, team-based care coordination with a strong focus on behavioral health care and social supports and services. Some states are building health home models on a medical home framework by expanding links to providers and increasing the breadth of available support services. The goal of the Medicaid health home state plan option is to promote access to and coordination of care. Core services provided includes the following:
• Comprehensive care management
• Care coordination
• Health promotion
• Comprehensive transitional care and follow-up
• Individual and family support
• Referral to community and social services
