We talk a lot about the importance of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for stability, but we need to make sure you’re taking your meds the right way, every time. Correct dosing is what keeps cravings down & withdrawal away.
Your safety is our priority, so we got the official lowdown from our NP on the best way to handle your methadone or Suboxone dose, especially when it comes to your pearly whites!
Methadone: Smooth & Simple
Methadone is pretty straightforward, usually taken once a day (unless your metabolism requires something different, always talk to your provider!)
Your Methadone Game Plan
• One & Done: Swallow your dose orally in one smooth drink.
• Rinse & Finish: If your dose is mixed with liquid (like we do in the clinic), drink the whole cup. Then, refill the cup with a little water/juice, swish it around, & drink that too: this ensures you get every single drop of your medication.
• Wait to Chew/Smoke: Don’t chew gum, smoke, or eat right before dosing. This can mess with absorption & upset your stomach.
• Fatigue Check: If you’re super tired or nauseous midday, let your provider know! Adjustments are normal.
Methadone & Teeth: The Real Story
You’ve probably heard the myth: “Methadone rots your teeth.” Our NP is clear on this: It’s a myth.
There’s no good study proving that methadone directly damages teeth. Dental issues are almost always due to neglect of regular dental care. Your takeaway? Keep brushing & see your dentist!
Suboxone Films: Technique is Everything!
Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) films are tricky because they have to absorb directly through the inside of your mouth. Getting the technique right is crucial for success.
Suboxone Step-by-Step
1. Prep Your Mouth: Wait about 10–15 minutes after eating, drinking anything but water, smoking, or vaping. You want a clean slate.
2. Place the Film: Put the film under your tongue or against your cheek. I know, the taste isn’t great!
3. Let it Dissolve: Let it fully melt: do NOT chew, swallow, or talk while it’s dissolving (usually 5–10 minutes).
The Crucial Post-Dose Move (Protect Your Enamel🦷)
Because Suboxone is acidic, the FDA warns it can increase the risk of decay. But we have a simple fix, straight from our NP & dentists:
After the film is 100% dissolved:
• Take a sip of water.
• Swish gently around your teeth & gums.
• Swallow.
This simple swish can help neutralize the acid & protect your enamel. Some dentists also recommend brushing before you dose too, then waiting to take your medications. Speak to your dentist for more in-depth information & personalized recommendations.
The Golden Rule for Brushing:
• Wait at least ONE HOUR after your dose before you brush your teeth.
• Brushing sooner can hurt your enamel & might mess with the absorption.
• Brush SOFTLY, as brushing too hard can be just as harmful. We recommend a soft bristle brush.
• Let your dentist know you’re on MAT, they’ll be able to give you more individualized tips.
Final Tips for Stability
• Routine Matters: Take your medication at the same time every day.
• Be Honest: Tell your provider about any symptoms. Dose changes are a normal part of MAT!
• Lock It Up: Keep your meds safe and secure in a lockbox, away from kids, pets, & anyone else.
• Never Mix: No alcohol or unprescribed sedatives with your MAT meds.
